As many of you know, Fiddle & Bow presented a folk festival from 1990 until 2007. We have toyed with the idea of reviving it over the years and thought a smaller, shorter event might be good way to test the water. When two excellent bands contacted us about a booking for the same date we decided, “Here’s our chance!”
Low Lily is a trio of musicians from various parts of the Northeast featuring Liz Simmons on guitar and vocals, Flynn Cohen on guitar, mandolin, and vocals, and Lissa Schneckenburger on vocals and fiddle. Their repertoire is a mixture of traditional songs and some originals in that style. It has been said of the band that they have “…a knack of putting a little pop twist on a traditional folk/Americana sound…it’s a blend that works beautifully.”
The Fretless are a quartet of musicians from Vancouver Island, Canada featuring Karrmel Sawitsky on fiddle, Ivonne Hernandez on fiddle, Eric Wright on cello, and Trent Freeman on fiddle. They have won 3 Canadian Folk Music Association Awards and 2 Western Canadian Music Awards. This unique band is taking string music to fascinating places as it transforms fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high energy arrangements.
Also joining the Mini-Festival with some great old-time music will be Paul Brown and Terri McMurray as Mountain Birch Duo. Many of you will know Paul from his work with NPR News and as an authority on old-time music. Paul has just begun to host Across The Blue Ridge on WFDD. He and Terri are excellent musicians as well on guitar, fiddle, and banjo.
Rounding out the day’s entertainment will be Crann Ull featuring Margaret Rush from Dublin, Ireland on vocals and guitar and Rob Sharer from Raleigh on vocals, guitar, fiddle and flute. Their music is a mixture of traditional Celtic songs and tunes and some contemporary songs as well, both done with skill and appreciation for their sources. Rob is a member of Craicdown, which has performed a couple of times at the Bethabara Park Highland Games.
