String band musicians Hasee Ciaccio, Sam Gleaves, Tyler Hughes and Emily Mann will perform “Winter Jubilee: Music and Memories from the Mountain South,” a show of old time country music, dance and storytelling with a holiday theme. “Winter Jubilee” is the first exciting collaboration and tour for these four talented musicians and singers. The show celebrates the winter holidays Appalachian-style, featuring fiddle and banjo tunes, top-notch harmony singing, spirited dancing and warm stories that surround the music.
Currently residing in Nashville, Tennessee, Hasee Ciaccio is a vocalist, upright bass player and guitarist who tours regularly with The Molly Tuttle Band. While studying at East Tennessee State University, Ciaccio performed with the Old-Time Pride Band and the Barefoot Movement. With these groups, Ciaccio has performed at venues such as New York City’s Lincoln Center and shared the stage with a number of esteemed artists including Dr. Ralph Stanley, Claire Lynch and the Carolina Chocolate Drops.
During her time at East Tennessee State, Ciaccio began her musical collaboration and friendship with southwest Virginia native Tyler Hughes. A skilled singer, storyteller, banjo picker and autoharp player, Hughes is equally at home calling square dances and flatfooting, the percussive dance style of the southern Appalachians. Hughes is known to regional audiences as part of the Johnson City, Tennessee group the Empty Bottle Stringband and he performs as a duo with Sam Gleaves.
Based in Berea, Kentucky, Sam Gleaves is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has studied traditional music with a number of master artists including Jim Lloyd, Sheila Kay Adams and Cathy Fink. Gleaves’ 2015 album AIN’T WE BROTHERS received international acclaim for its progressive perspective on Appalachian music.
Emily Mann is a Big Sur, CA native with her heart in the old Appalachian mountains. Also a singer and multi-instrumentalist, Mann grew up immersing herself in a variety of traditional music styles and is a fluid and well rounded musician as a result. The duo Paper Wings, Darol Anger’s Furies and the old time string band The Crooked Jades are among the list of Mann’s musical collaborations.
Sam Gleaves shared that “The ‘Winter Jubilees’ shows will be so much fun because each of us in the band are dear friends. We want to share the sense of community that is the backbone of these songs and tunes and show that music and dance is the best way to come together.”
